Huskey Steadily Climbs To the Top

Second Round Leader Keenan Huskey (-9)

The goal on the second day of the 84th SCGA Amateur Championship at Chanticleer was to complete two rounds of golf, and what an exhilarating two rounds of golf it was. With the second wave of groups from round one having to finish their final holes in the morning, the second round of the Amateur Championship began on a one hour delay behind them.

Round one was completed with 15 year old Trent Phillips of Inman holding onto the lead after an opening round 66. What transpired after that in round two, showed that consistency is a trait needed stay at the top of the leaderboard while playing the strategically navigable Chanticleer course. Keenan Huskey, Greenville native and a rising sophomore golfer at The University of South Carolina, will take the lead into the third day of the SCGA Amateur Championship after a second round five under par 67 in addition to his first round score of 68. Huskey began his day on hole #10 compiling three birdies, three pars, two bogeys, and eagled the 499 yard par five 17th hole. By adding three birdies on his first seven holes on the back nine he was able negate a treacherous double bogey on his 17th hole by adding yet another birdie on his 18th hole.

Mid-Amateur golfers Lee Palms (Greenville) and Walter Todd (Laurens) are showing the field how experience and knowledge at times overpower youth strength. Lee Palms, 2008 SCGA Amateur Champion and Greenville Country Club Member, knows a thing or two about winning championships and a lot about maneuvering around his home course. After an opening round 68 and a second round of even par 72, he will enter the third round fives shot behind Huskey. Todd, a golfing powerhouse in his own right, will be six shots behind.

The third round of the Amateur Championship will begin on Saturday morning at 8.00 am off of #1 and #10 tees. For pairings, full scores including individual hole by hole scores and other information, you may visit the SCGA Amateur web page at
